Descriptioni2CAT Foundation is a non-profit research and innovation centre which promotes R+D+i activities in Information and Communication Technologies and Future Internet. The centre stands up for a new open innovation framework, fostering the collaboration between companies, public administration, the academic environment and end-users.
i2CAT has a wide experience in multiple national and european R+D+i projects, leading research lines in new fixed & mobile network architectures, wireless sensor networks, and content-based multimedia technologies, with the aim to develop new products, services and applications in the fields of eHealth, SmartCities & Smart Regions, Advanced Manufacturing and Culture/Creativity.
i2CAT has some developments in key technologies such:
-in the area of radio triggered wake-up solutions that allows building ultra low power communication systems
-in the area of Visible Light Communication based on smart phone with developments that use the camera or the light sensor on the mobile.
- in building hardware platforms with BLE or ultra low power WiFi solutions

IoT expertise on hardware, software and protocol development
The research group has been working in the development of IoT devices since more that 10 years ago. The expertise ranges from IEEE802.15.4, BLE, NFC, VLC, low power WiFI, Z-Wave and cheap cellular solutions. The group has contributed to the IoT standardization for 6LoWPAN and CoAP. The group is able to cover from the hardware design to the protocol implementation.

Communication system development
The research center has a proven expertise in developing simple and innovative communication systems that may use BLE, NFC, WiFi, Cellular and light. Aspects such price and power consumption are considered.
